Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
Slowly stir in hot water or coffee. Batter will be thin but smooth.
Divide the batter evenly into the cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
In a mixing bowl, beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt, mixing until combined.
Stir in vanilla extract and heavy cream, then beat until light and fluffy.
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread ½ of the frosting evenly on top.
Add the second cake layer and spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides.
Let set for 10 minutes, then slice and serve!
Notes
For an even richer chocolate flavor, use coffee instead of water in the batter.
