Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • 8x8-inch Baking Dish
  • Oven

Ingredients

For the Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted

For the Topping

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • Stir in milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, mix granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder. Evenly sprinkle this mixture over the batter.
  • Gently pour boiling water over the entire dish. Do not stir—this creates the gooey chocolate sauce as it bakes.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is set but a fudgy sauce bubbles underneath.
  • Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Spoon out warm cobbler and top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the ultimate dessert experience!

Notes

For an extra indulgent touch, sprinkle chopped nuts or additional chocolate chips over the batter before baking. Serve warm for the best gooey texture.
